Is Mercantilism Still Relevant?

In the 17th century, there was one dominant ideology occur in the international political and economy system, which was Mercantilism. Mercantilism mainly focuses on the state as the main actor in political economy, which means a lot of government intervention is required for making a regulation in order to improve the state's economy, its power and security.

Based on one reference, Mercantilist focuses on state efforts to accumulate wealth and power to protect its society from physical harm or the influence of other states. The policies used by the mercantilist are usually aimed to alter the economic nationalism in which the states really encourage and promote export, while trying to reduce import in order to generate more wealth. Government will do this by applying some import regulations such as tariffs and quota. By that system, the national economy will improve, thus the wealth will increase.

If we talk about the relevance to the nowadays political and economy system, in my opinion, it is still relevant because most of the states nowadays also have objectives to improve their economic well-being by concerning about the national economic as the main priority. As for example in Indonesia itself, there are a lot of advertisements and campaign with tagline “love indonesian products”, it is obviously aimed to encourage the consumption of local goods. When people consume more local goods rather than imported goods, the local industries will also helped by this situation, they could be more productive, and when consumption is also high it will surely contributes to the GDP and the economic growth.

So the conclusion is, the relevance of mercantilist policies to the recent political economy remained undoubted, most of systems at this moment still apply the ideas of mercantilist policies which focuses more on economic nationalism. The development of political and economy system is highly influenced by the mercantilist ideology, so that's why we still find that the mercantilist policies is still relevant for nowadays situation.
